With dramatic comebacks, an all-English final and moments that will be forever etched in footballing folklore, it was arguably the greatest European season ever.

Ahead of the big kick-off on Tuesday 17 September, BTSport.com relives the top 10 games from last season’s Champions League.

10. Tottenham 2-4 Barcelona

Group B, Matchday 2 – October 3 2018

Lionel Messi produced a Wembley masterclass to condemn Spurs to a second successive group stage defeat and put their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds in serious doubt.

Returning to the scene of their 2011 triumph, Barca had too much for their hosts and their captain was at the heart of it all – only the post, twice, denying him his hat-trick.

9. Ajax 3-3 Bayern Munich

Group E, Matchday 6 – December 12 2018

Ajax gave Europe a warning of what was to come as they played out an entertaining and ill-tempered draw with Champions League heavyweights Bayern.

Robert Lewandowski and former Southampton man Dusan Tadic both scored two apiece but it was the late drama that caught the eye, with four goals scored from the 82nd minute onwards.

8. Liverpool 3-2 PSG

Group C, Matchday 1 – September 18 2018

Liverpool were handed a tough task to start the campaign, welcoming the Ligue 1 champions to Anfield on a European night.

Roberto Firmino, who was only fit enough for a place on the bench, stole the show with an injury-time winner to send Neymar and Kylian Mbappe home empty handed.

7. Man City 7-0 Schalke

Round of 16, second leg – March 12 2019

With a slender one-goal advantage from the first leg, the Premier League champions ran riot at the Etihad Stadium to ease into the quarter-finals.

Raheem Sterling scored the pick of the bunch as City recorded the second-largest aggregate victory in Champions League knockout stage history with their 10-2 win.

6. Real Madrid 1-4 Ajax

Round of 16, second leg – March 5 2019

Holders and 13-time European champions Real Madrid were outclassed by a vibrant, young Ajax side that won their first Champions League knockout tie in 22 years.

The La Liga side led 2-1 from the first leg but without captain Sergio Ramos, who was suspended after deliberately picking up a yellow card in the reverse fixture, they were all at sea defensively.

5. Juventus 3-0 Atletico Madrid

Round of 16, second leg – March 12 2019

The Champions League’s record goalscorer stole the show once again, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to send Juve through to the last eight.

His eighth hat-trick in the competition ended Atletico’s hopes of playing the final in their own Wanda Metropolitano stadium and showed exactly why the Serie A champions snapped up Ronaldo last summer.

4. PSG 1-3 Man Utd

Round of 16, second leg – March 6 2019

Looking to become the first team in Champions League and European Cup history, at the 107th time of asking, to overcome a 2-0 or greater home first-leg deficit the odds were stacked against United.

But inspired by the hero of their 1999 success, caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer guided a side without suspended star man Paul Pogba into the quarter-finals.

3. Man City 4-3 Tottenham

Quarter-final, second leg – April 17 2019

Spurs made history by reaching the last four of the Champions League for the first time as they ended City’s hopes of an unprecedented quadruple.

Fernando Llorente bundled home for the vital away goal, confirmed by VAR 17 minutes from time, before the technology was again called for to rule out Raheem Sterling's injury-time strike.

2. Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona

Semi-final, second leg – May 7 2019

Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history to reach their second successive final in a titanic night an Anfield.

The Reds became the first team to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit to win a semi-final in the competition since 1986 and now chase their sixth European crown.

1. Ajax 2-3 Tottenham

Semi-final, second leg – May 8 2019

Not to be outdone by Liverpool the night before, Lucas Moura scored a dramatic 96th-minute winner to seal a remarkable comeback for the away side.

Setting up an all-English final in the process, Spurs were 3-0 down on aggregate with just 45 minutes of the tie remaining but Moura’s second-half hat-trick lit up the Johan Cruyff ArenA.
