Vesna Dolonc once again showed her best form in Moscow to reach the second round of the Kremlin Cup.
A year ago, the 24-year-old reached her first premier-level quarter-final on the WTA Tour at the same event, and on Tuesday she knocked out ninth seed and former champion Dominika Cibulkova 3-6 7-5 6-3.
Qualifier Dolonc, ranked 92nd, was born in Moscow and used to represent Russia but switched her allegiance to Serbia last year.
She said on www.wtatennis.com: "I think I play well here because I finally feel at home and can relax. It's always nice because I have my whole family and friends here - I always enjoy the Kremlin Cup."
Sixth seed Carla Suarez Navarro was the other seed in action, and she defeated lucky loser Vera Dushevina 6-4 6-3.
There was one Russian winner, Elena Vesnina brushing aside Yaroslava Shvedova 6-1 6-2, while Daniela Hantuchova beat Arantxa Parra Santonja by the same score.
Magdalena Rybarikova and Klara Zakopalova were also victorious while qualifier Sofia Arvidsson lost the first set 6-0 to Galina Voskoboeva but recovered to win.
