Khabib vs McGregor is more than ably backed up by another huge showdown in the same division between #2 contender Tony Ferguson and former champion Anthony Pettis.

Ferguson has been lined up to face Khabib on four separate occasions only for injury and illness to strike each time.

Like the Russian, he is on a ten-fight winning streak and will surely demand to face the winner of the main event if he can see off 'Showtime'.

Elsewhere, up-and-coming light heavyweight Dominick Reyes puts his perfect 9-0 (6 KOs) record on the line against the experienced Ovince Saint-Preux, while fireworks seem assured when renowned heavyweight KO artists Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov collide.

The main card is completed by an intriguing clash between Michelle Waterson and Felice Herrig in the hugely competitive women's strawweight division.

UFC 229 is most certainly a family affair for the Pettis clan, with Anthony's younger brother, Sergio, headlining the preliminary card in his flyweight battle with Jussier Formiga.

UFC 229 Main Card:

Khabib Nurmagomedov (c) vs Conor McGregor - Lightweight
Tony Ferguson vs Anthony Pettis - Lightweight
Ovince Saint-Preux vs Dominick Reyes – Light-heavyweight
Derrick Lewis vs Alexander Volkov – Heavyweight
Michelle Waterson vs Felice Herrig – Strawweight

UFC 229 Preliminary Card:

Sergio Pettis vs Jussier Formiga - Flyweight
Vicente Luque vs Jalin Turner - Welterweight
Aspen Ladd vs Tonya Evinger - Bantamweight
Scott Holtzman vs Alan Patrick - Lightweight

"This man would be dead right now."

That was McGregor's response when asked what would have happened if Nurmagomedov had stepped off the bus following the now infamous UFC media day bust-up at Brooklyn's Barclays Center in April.

The story goes that a confrontation between McGregor's friend and training partner Artem Lobov and Khabib led to McGregor throwing a metal dolly into the window of a bus carrying fighters, including the Russian.

The Irishman was given five days of community service in the United States after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct in July.

McGregor has since wasted little time adding fuel to the fire ahead of his must-watch return to the octagon, vowing to "take [Khabib's] head off".

The spat between the pair has become increasingly personal and, curiously, political ahead of their showdown.

McGregor cited support for his "Chechen friends", who he claimed told him that Dagestanis such as Khabib have "chicken jaws".

The champion responded in kind, clashing with the hordes of Irish fans who have descended on Las Vegas, even suggesting that McGregor's grandfather "killed your people" when he was part of the English navy.

The clear and genuine enmity between the pair adds another edge to a stylistically pleasing grappler versus striker collision that already had all the hallmarks of a potential classic.

McGregor has not fought in the UFC since November 2016, exactly 99 weeks ago come October 6th, when he beat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title and became the first fighter to hold two titles simultaneously.

He was stripped of his belt for being inactive and Nurmagomedov subsequently won the 155lb title by beating Al Iaquinta as the Russian extended his perfect career MMA record to 26-0.

The 30-year-old Dubliner now has his sights set on winning the lightweight belt for a second time, in just his second fight in the division, in front of what will undoubtedly be a raucous crowd.

All in all, it promises to be an incredible rollercoaster ride at the T-Mobile Arena - so strap in, sit back and enjoy it all with BT Sport.
