Kevin Durant led the Golden State Warriors to a 119-106 victory over the Houston Rockets in their opening game of the Western Conference finals.
Durant poured in 37 points, while Klay Thompson added 28 – including six three-pointers – as the reigning NBA champions drew first blood at Toyota Center.
James Harden came out on top for the Rockets with 41 points but it was not enough to prevent his team’s second home loss of the post-season.
After a positive start to the fourth quarter, a three-pointer from Eric Gordon narrowing the Warriors’ lead to four, the Rockets could not capitalise on the rally as Thompson helped put his side 100-87 to the good with eight minutes remaining.
Harden did not give up, bringing the scoreline to 103-96 with less than five minutes to go, but Thompson clawed back three to put the Warriors on the road to victory and 1-0 up in the series.
