Women's hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh has been named as England's flag bearer for the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony.

After 11 days of sport, the curtain comes down on the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games at Hampden Park on Sunday evening.

Having won a medal at a fourth successive Commonwealths, England hockey captain Richardson-Walsh has been given the honour of carrying the flag.

The 34-year-old led the women's team to silver in Glasgow and was selected for the role in a vote by her fellow competitors.

"I am emotional, as always," Richardson-Walsh said. "It is such an honour, I think particularly because the whole of team England has performed so well.

"It just adds that extra bit of pride to be carrying the flag at the closing ceremony.

"I am just so excited. I am just hoping I don't trip over, to be honest."
