Whatever happens over the next week to 10 days, one of baseball’s longest title droughts will expire when the last out is taken or the winning run is scored.

Everyone knows the Chicago Cubs haven’t won the World Series since 1908 (or even appeared in the end of season showpiece since 1945) but the Indians drought is also the second longest of any active franchise as they last won it in 1948.

Here BT Sport takes a look at the two teams who will battle it out for the trophy and considers their relative strengths and weaknesses.

CHICAGO CUBS

How they got here?

The Chicago Cubs won the National League Central division with a regular season record of 105-58.

They then beat National League wildcard winners the San Francisco Giants 3-1 in the divisional series before coming from behind to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 in the National League Championship Series.

Who are the key players?

Big hitters Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant bring power to the Cubs line up while Addison Russell and the in-form Javier Baez are two of the best infielders in the business.

The Cubs starting pitching is also exceptionally strong with John Lester, Kyle Hendricks and 2015 CY Young winning pitcher Jake Arrieta an enviable front three in the rotation.

Aroldis Chapman is one of the best closers in the business.

Why they might win

The Cubs started the season as favourites, enjoyed the best regular season record of any side in baseball and have so-far eased through post-season without facing an elimination game.

Joe Maddon’s side showed plenty of character after going 2-1 down against the Dodgers and on paper have more power and better starting pitching than the Indians.

Why they might lose

Although they have banished already banished one ghost, or goat as the case may be, the weight of expectation could start to weigh heavy on the Cubs shoulders.

Their bullpen is arguably the weaker of the two teams while they also go into the series without home advantage as the National League lost the all-star game to the American League.

CLEVELAND INDIANS

How they got here?

The Indians won the American League Central division with a regular season record of 94-67. They then swept the much-fancied

Boston Red Sox 3-0 in their divisional series before beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 in the American League Championship Series.

Who are the key players?

Mike Napoli and Carlos Santana both hit 34 home runs in the regular season and ensure the Indians’ offence packs a punch while Corey Kluber remains the ace pitcher at the top of the rotation.

The Indians bullpen is also very strong with Andrew Millar, who was acquired from the New York Yankees in a big trade in July, the pick of the bunch.

Why they might win

Manager Terry Francona knows how to win the World Series after twice winning with the Red Sox and seems to have got the Indians to peak at just the right time.

Cleveland swept the Sox and looked a level above the Blue Jays on route to a comfortable 4-1 victory.

As mentioned previously, their bullpen is exceptionally strong and home advantage could be crucial if the series goes to game six or seven.

Why they might lose

Although their injury worries seem to be easing starting pitching remains a concern and much will depend on whether the Indians’ starters can eat up enough innings to give the bullpen something to work with.

The Cubs look stronger in more areas and over a seven game series you could make a case the cream will rise to the top.
