Liverpool and Red Bull Salzburg played out an Anfield thriller as Mohamed Salah's winner eventually settled a topsy-turvy contest that saw Jurgen Klopp's men sacrifice a three-goal lead.
Chelsea secured a huge three points away at Lille thanks to Willian's clinical winner while Luis Suarez's double saw Barcelona come from behind to beat Inter Milan at Camp Nou.
Last season's finalists Ajax made light work of Valencia, running out comfortable winners at the Mestalla and Lyon secured an equally impressive away win as they saw off Bundesliga high-flyers RB Leipzig. It was an unhappy trip to Russia for Benfica though as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Zenit St Petersburg.
Meanwhile in the early kick-offs Borussia Dortmund defeated Slavia Prague 2-0 in the Czech Republic thanks to a double from right back Achraf Hakimi while Genk and Napoli played out a relatively entertaining goalless draw.
Two goals from Salah settle an Anfield thriller as Liverpool race into a three-goal lead, get pegged back to 3-3 by the plucky Austrians, and eventually clinch the contest thanks to the Egyptian.
A first Champions League win for Frank Lampard's Chelsea as Willian and Tammy Abraham goals either side of a Victor Osimhen header are enough to see the Blues through to victory in France.
Luis Suarez comes to the rescue as his brace sees Barcelona come from a goal down against Inter Milan to secure a crucial win at the Camp Nou.
Genk claim their first point in this season's Champions League with a goalless draw against Napoli as both sides missed golden opportunities to make the breakthrough.
On-loan Real Madrid man Achraf Hakimi is the unlikely hero as the right back nets both goals in Borussia Dortmund's victory in the Czech capital.
Ajax ease to a 3-0 win in Valencia as Hakim Ziyech, Quincy Promes and Donny van de Beek strike to see off the Spaniards.
Memphis Depay and Martin Terrier strike either side of half-time as Lyon secure a surprise victory over Bundesliga title-challengers RB Leipzig.
Zenit run out 3-1 winners at the Gazprom Arena over Benfica with Artem Dzyuba, Sardar Azmoun and an own goal enough to see the Russians to victory.
Goal of the night
Hakim Ziyech opened the scoring at the Mestalla in the eighth minute with a wonder goal. The winger, who lit up the competition last season, cut inside and smashed a wonderful effort into the top corner leaving Valencia keeper Neto grasping at thin air.
Save of the night
Marc-Andre ter Stegen shows some lightening-quick reflexes to deny Lautaro Martinez his second goal of the night. The German gets down brilliantly to parry the Argentine's header away.
Lionel Messi returned from injury but it was Suarez's night in Barcelona as the Uruguayan netted both his side's goals in the 2-1 win over Inter Milan.
The former Liverpool man levelled with a stunning volley before settling the contest six minutes from time, scoring from Messi's assist to earn a valuable three points for Ernesto Valverde's side.
